2. Available Servers List

The Available Servers list contains the servers that are currently available to browse. You can add layers from any connected server in the list. You can add and remove servers from the list using the buttons in the Server Tools section.

Instructions: There are a number of servers loaded into the server list by default. Any server in the list can be removed, disconnected, refreshed or tested using buttons in the Server Tools section. These operations will be described in more detail section 3 below. To perform an operation on a server select it from the list and use the appropriate button in the Server Tools section. Servers can also be added to the list using the Server Properties section below it.

The status of the server is indicated by the bracketed letter beside each. [c] indicates that a server is connected. [d] indicates that a server is disconnected.

More information about the servers in the list is available. To see more information select the server name from the list and consult the Server Properties section below. More detail on that section is given in section 5 of this guide.

3. Server Tools

The Server Tools section contains buttons that allow you to perform operations on servers in the Available Servers list.

Instructions:

The Connect button connects a server that is currently disconnected. The connection status of servers in the list is indicated by the bracketed letter preceding the name. [c] indicates that a server is connected. [d] indicates that a server is disconnected. If a server is disconnected and you want to connect it, click the Connect button. When you do so information on the status of the operation is displayed in the Server Information section. Text will appear in the Server Information section indicating whether or not the connection was successful. If the connection is successful a [c] will appear beside the server name in the list.

The Disconnect button disconnects a server that is currently connected. To disconnect a server select it from the list and click the Disconnect button. Text will appear in the Server Information section indicating whether or not the disconnection was successful. If the disconnection is successful a [d] will appear beside the server name in the list.

Notes: Disconnecting a server does not remove it from the list. If you wish to remove a server from the list use the Remove button.

The Refresh button refreshes the connection to a server. This is not required under most circumstances, but if you know that additional data layers have been added to a server and they do not appear in the layer list for the server in the Explore WMS Layers tool you can try refreshing the server. This should cause the new layers to appear.

Notes: You can refresh a connected or disconnected server. Refreshing will not affect the connection status of a server.

The Test button tests a server's connection. If a server does not seem functional you can try the Test button to diagnose the problem. Text will appear in the Server Information section indicating the results of the tese.

Notes: You can test a connected or disconnected server. Testing will not affect the connection status of a server.

The Remove button will remove a server from the list. To remove a server select it from the list and click the button. Once you have removed a server is can be added back to the list if you know its online resource or URL.

Notes: Servers are only removed from the list for the duration of your session, or visit to the GoMMaP web site. If you leave the site and return the server list will appear in its original state with the predefined servers available.

5. Server Properties

The Server Properties section serves two functions. Using this section you can:

1. Get information about servers in the Server List
2. Add one or more servers to the Server List

Instructions:

1. To get information about a server select it from the Layer List and consult this section. Here you will find the name of the server, given by the GoMMaP system administrator, the Online resource or URL, and any available comments about the server.

Notes: You can safely change the server name and comments without affecting how a server works. The URL must remain the same however. If you do change either of those values you will need to click the Update button.

2. To add a server you will first need to know its online resource or URL. For more information on what this means see the section on open standards at here. If you know the URL enter it, along with a name and comments if you wish and click the Add button.

Notes: Only the URL is required. Name and comments are both optional, but a name is highly recommended in order to identify the server in the Server List.

6. Server Information

The Server Information section gives information about a server's status when you add a server or perform operations using the Server Tools.

Instructions: Information will appear in this section when you perform any of the following operations on a server:

  • Add
  • Remove
  • Connect
  • Disconnect
  • Refresh
  • Test
  • Update

Consult the text in the Output box to see if the operation was completed successfully.

Notes: WMS Servers may go off-line occasionally and heavy network traffic can cause them to functions improperly. If errors are reported in the output window first try the operation again, and if problems persist contact GoMMaP system administrator at: info@gommap.org.

The GoMMaP system administrator may not be able to offer help with servers outside the current GoMMaP partner group, i.e. the servers in the Server List. When reporting a problem with a WMS Server please be as specific as possible and include the server name and URL, the time at which the problem occurred, and the error message from the output window.
